If you live in  North America you might have been visited by a sales man from an energy company who offered you a contract for a fixed price of gas or electricity for the next 5 years. Guess what ... this sales man is an affiliate with the energy company and makes a commission per contract.

Online affiliate marketing is more popular than offline. If you bought anything online there is a good chance that you did through an affiliate, who made a commission on your deal. It is easy to understand, and easier to do it.

The challenge is to make enough money from affiliate marketing to quit your job and live the lifestyle of your dreams. It is not really that hard when you know how to do it. And the reason behind the dominant failure stories in affiliate marketing is usually that it was done improperly.

The biggest mistake that most affiliates do is that they find a product that offers a great affiliate program, then they start dreaming about the money they will make if they could make just one sale every day. But when they start they find that they are not making that sale each month, or ever.

That's why I always preach starting with finding the market. Even if you want to start with the products, do the market research before you invest your time, efforts, resources, and money in promoting this product.

One simple method of doing the market research if you are going to start with the product is to do a Google search for the most relevant keyword or phrase to the product. If you can find more than 10 sponsored ads it means that there is a market and people are making money. It also means that there is competition, which is good news, because it means that there is a lot of money being spent in this market.

Once you are confident that you found the market start comparing products with affiliate programs that you can promote to that market.

It is important to keep in mind that there are two groups of markets: buyers markets and information markets. Buyers are searching for something to buy with their credit cards in front of them. Information people are searching for more knowledge about something that came up recently in their lives and need to know more about it.

You can make money with both groups, although the first one is easier.
